How-To Guide: Apply For Your First Provisional Driving Licence
This guide will teach you how to apply for your first provisional driving licence online, this is the first step in being able to drive a moped, motorbike and car.
You can apply up to 2 months before your 17th birthday, however, you’re not permitted to drive until you’ve reached the required birthday.
To apply you must meet these qualifications:
Cars: At least 16 years old and 9 months
Motorcycle: Need to be at least 15 years old and 9 months old for a motorcycle, including special educational needs entitlements
You also must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away (Depending on circumstances this can be with or without corrective vision)
Information you will be required to show:
• Identity Document (Valid UK Biometric Passport Accepted)
• Your National Insurance
• Provide addresses where you’ve lived over the last 3 years
Once you have applied you will receive a confirmation email from the DVLA.
Your provisional licence should arrive in the post within 3 weeks. This might take longer if DVLA requires additional checks.
